Flash - Action Script - Local Folder Hey guys, I'm not sure if anyone here knows much about Flash, but I have a problem. So I'm building a drop down menu, and I'm done, almost, all I need is to link everything. The tutorial uses action script: on(release){ getURL("http://www.something.com",_blank) }
so it works for me when I enter actual website (ie coldplay.com) BUT I'm trying to link everything from my computer, this to be more specific: F:\ColdplayWebFinal\coldplay.html
But it DOESN't WORK :( and I spent so much time building everything. Is there any way to make it work? And if someone wants to see the tutorial here's the link to youtube, it is done at the very end. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHVYWcNitq4 |

.swf or .flv ?? I have an .avi file that I want to embed on my site, well actually I've converted it to a .swf and .flv file. Both conversions result in huge file sizes at almost 13megs, from a 34meg .avi file. Without the tools to convert my original .avi file.
What are my best options to shrink and re-encode my video file? |

application/animation halfbreed For a presentation, I'm supposed to pack a bunch of Ecotect thermal readings together, for different Uw values of a window . I planned to present them as a simple gif animation, but now I wonder if it's possible to make it more interactive for later use. What way/program would you suggest if I wanted to have a slider that takes the animation through frames. Or even two sliders, one for size, other for Uw value? Thanks heaps!! |

Couch to 5k - Week 7, Run 3 everydave's run 05/17/08 at 10:57 AM
| Distance: | 4.00 mi |
| Time: | 45'19" |
| Pace: | 11'18"/mi |

| full version |
There's something about Saturdays it would seem. I felt very comfy and pushed past the prescribed 25 min. run to do another 5k. For a few minutes near the end I seriously considered pushing 9 min. beyond that to run a full 4 miles. But no sooner had I started thinking about that, that my body decided to let me know I'd gone far enough by making my legs noticeably heavy. So I pushed through the last 2 minutes to hit the 5k mark and called it a day.
Not content with the fact that I acquiesced the point that I shouldn't push too hard and listen to my body, about 30 seconds into my cool down walk my right knee quickly stiffened up. I hadn't had this in a long time, but was familiar with it. I finished my cool down and did my stretching which loosened it up nicely. I also decided to do another 1/4 mile walk to recalibrate the nike+ as I noticed it's pacing when I walking has been a bit off
A good day. I sit here with ice on my knee, looking forward to next weeks run. 3 28 min. runs, though next weekend will prove to be interesting as we're doing a move on Saturday and I'm helping suzie_lightning do a quick furniture move on Sunday. I'll get my runs in, just might be a little bit different schedule...it'll be interesting to see what kind of effect that has on things.

“Everyone’s a superhero, everyone’s a Captain Kirk…” Originally published at Random Access. Please leave any comments there. Saturday - 17 May 2008
One of the great things about the weekend is the ability to sleep in.
Too bad nobody told my body about that.
I’ve been awake since 6:45 this morning. In an effort not to awaken SaraRules, I headed into the living room and read some of the books that Dave set aside for me during Free Comic Book Day. When I tired of that, I fired up the XBox 360 and played a bit of Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I figured that if I couldn’t watch superheroes (since my favorite ‘toons are off the air), I would play superhero. I haven’t played this game in a LONG time - and the last time I played was on the old XBox… so I was starting over. From Square One. But it was fun.
After SaraRules woke up, she made - MADE - a coffee cake. We also channel-surfed a bit, until settling on The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
Today, we’re going to run some errands and just… hang out.
Tonight, breakfast.
In between… well, we’ll just see what comes up.

CITIZENS CALL FOR END TO HEMP PROHIBITION MAY 17
LOCAL PSYCHEDELIC ROCK AND BLUES GROUP "RED CAPS" WILL PLAY FREE SHOW
As the price of fuel rises, many in Utah are looking for alternative answers to power their vehicles. "One solution is hemp", says local citizen activist, Daniel McGuire. The current resolution offered by our government is to use corn as an alternate fuel. According to McGuire there is a better option. "Hemp, is a much better alternative fuel for so many reasons". Some reasons offered are that corn should be used for human and animal consumption, since there is a limited supply of corn, and corn is not as renewable as Hemp.
Ben Valdez of Hempower Utah explains that Hemp is a crop that can be grown up to 4 times a year, depending on the region, where as corn has up to 2 growing cycles per year. "Acre per acre Hemp out produces corn", says Valdez. "The end result is that there will be enough fuel to power Utah vehicles as well as enough Hemp seed to feed both livestock and humans". Hemp, according to Valdez, has all the essential Amino Acids and Omega3 Fatty Acids to sustain human life. Hemp is a plant that " has a history of solving a vast amount of economic, fuel, food, fiber and agricultural problems". American history is painted with legitimate use of Hemp for legitimate commercial products. The problem is that Hemp is a relative of the Marijuana plant and is prohibited by US and Utah law.
Dr. Ken Larsen, former candidate for Utah governor and research scientist says that the law against Hemp is not only unreasonable it's unconstitutional. "I have $100.00 for the first person who can show me where in the Utah constitution it gives our government the authority to prohibit Hemp and another $100.00 for the same in the US Constitution". Larsen is confident that no one can collect on his challenge because neither constitution gives government the authority to prohibit it.
As things stand now, anyone growing Hemp will be charged the same as anyone growing Marijuana. The difference is that Hemp can't get anyone high. Valdez stresses, "You can smoke an acre of Hemp and the only thing you will get is a headache, you will never get high". McGuire also says that Hemp can be used to make high protein hemp milk, clothing, paper, paint, food, cosmetics, particle board, durable textiles, and even plastic bags.
Utah and the Nation faces ever increasing gas prices and problems with oil producing nations, McGuire says "We see this as a way to boost the American economy and help achieve energy independence. |

1. On federal and states levels, what limitations exist with respect to awarding lawyer fees in a civil trial? 2. Is there anything in the law books preventing a judge from just going "I hate red heads, so i'm awarding legal fees to spite you"? 3. In a civil suit in Georgia, where an alleged victim sues an alleged rapist for rape and the judge awards the defendant legal fees, what recourse does the plaintiff have? I am thinking of this case (this article is a bit biased, but contains the basic information) involving Melanie Ross, the plaintiff, and Daniel Day, the defendant. The judge awarded Day $150k in legal fees. The Day family supposedly has quite a bit of influence/pull in this county and is wealthy, if anyone is interested. |

“Forgive us our cynical thoughts.” Originally published at Random Access. Please leave any comments there. Friday - 16 May 2008
Another week draws to a close…
Last night’s (first) CSI: episode was, thankfully, much better than last week’s episode; I didn’t watch the season finale as SaraRules wanted to see The Office season finale. (And, thanks once again to On Demand, I’ll be able to watch the CSI: episode at my leisure.) While she watched The Office, I finished reading this week’s four-color shwag. I’ll come back to that in a few.
I believe that jet lag - and just general weariness - caught up with me last night, too. While watching an episode of L&O: SVU, I started getting tired. With twenty minutes left in the show, I realized that there was pretty much NO way that I was going to make it that long. We got up, got ready for bed and I was out within minutes of my head hitting the pillow…
…which must have been fairly hard, because I woke up with a lovely headache. *blah*
Four-Color Coverage
Part of this week’s comic haul included a couple of books that I didn’t get last week because of the trip to Florida. A few of the books included Secret Invasion tie-ins/crossovers. While I really hope that Marvel isn’t taking a cue from Staples and just pushing the “Easy” button…

…I have to admit that I am finding the storyline rather interesting. So far, we know that:
- Some heroes are not who they appear to be.
- The Skrulls have a SERIOUS mad on for Earth.
- October 12th is important to Hawkeye.
- Johnny Storm’s ex-wife has some… unresolved issues.
- Tony Stark is still a jerk (at least in the comics).
I’m waiting to see how this storyline plays out and what it means for the Marvel Universe after the dust clears.
I also read the long overdue Action Comics Annual, which wrapped up the “Last Son” storyline which began over a year ago in Action Comics. Unfortunately, there have been so many problems in getting that story to print that DC had actually gone ahead and run stories that followed the “Last Son” story… which means that we already know how things wound up. Sure, we might not know all of the “hows” and “whys,” but we can connect the dots fairly easily.
I have a similar problem with Astonishing X-Men, by the way. Joss Whedon’s run was supposed to be 24 issues, but because of delays it ran to 25 issues… with the final issue still not on shelves yet. But, once again, we know how things wind up, to some degree; there are just a few loose ends to tie up.

Quote #1 comes from conversations with shockpuppet and asdf_cat:
Me: If you and shockpuppet ever get to this point, you HAVE to get it on video: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080515/ap_on_fe_st/odd_frying_pan_assault_3
asdf_cat: oh. we do that for fun every friday night.
shockpuppet: totally
shockpuppet: I prefer a panini maker though
Me: Huh.
shockpuppet: it’s a little harder to get swinging
shockpuppet: but
- it’s heavier
- it leaves a funny pattern on his face
Me: Best of all possible worlds, huh?
shockpuppet: Well, I’m a believer in efficiency and aesthetics.
Me: I see
asdf_cat: mmm. panini face.
Quote #2 comes from another conversation with asdf_cat:
Me: Did you tell loonybin88 that he’s on point for [project]?
asdf_cat: That’s what I’ve been trying to do.
Me: Is he trying not to hear you?
asdf_cat: Yeah, I think so, actually. But, I figured that I’d go ahead and volunteer him for it and just ask forgiveness later.
Me: What is this… “forgiveness?”
asdf_cat: You wouldn’t understand. It’s like a haircut.

Late-afternoon quick hits Originally published at Random Access. Please leave any comments there.
strange has a post, entitled “Unpopular Opinions,” in which she shares her opinion of three trends in popular culture. While I somewhat disagree with her first point and have no frame of reference for her third, I wholeheartedly agree with her second point:
Twittering is the equivalent of short-attention-spam theatre (and in case you are wondering, that typo is indeed intentional). If you want to communicate with/to me, I need substance and depth. Reading twitter posts is like watching Robot Chicken minus the clever humour and pop culture references. It’s like eating plain rice cakes, boring as all fuck and not satisfying at all.
- I like tulips. I would go so far as to rate them as one of my favorite flowers.

If you’re in the SLC metro area, go there. Their Sunday brunch is also very good… but be warned: Either get there early or be prepared for a lengthy wait to be seated.
Today has been good, so far. Warm, sunny, a few clouds in a blue sky. Not shabby at all. Work hasn’t been bad either.

garden beginnings yesterday i put 3 bags of turkey shit compost into the tomato raised bed and got it all nice and ready. there's 2 strawberry plants going crazy in there already, and i have some volunteer lettuce plants that i decided to keep. my rosemary lived through the winter in there, too. neat!
today we put in the tomato ladders, in a staggered fashion, so that they're farther apart than last year, and the ones in the back should get more direct water from the sprinkler. this year's tomato menu is as thus:
1884 Wins All Purple Russian Black from Tula Brandywine
i also have a Purple Cherokee, but he's just a little baby still, and a tomatillo plant that i will be planting in the large garden. who's grown a tomatillo before? i dunno what to do with it, it was just sort of a whim purchase. if i'm right, i've purchased nothing but huge tomatoes that will yield tons of delicious spaghetti sauce making fruit for me. yay! i'll post pictures later. |

OTOH, in a function library, anything other than die could get quite clunky in the code. Consider this code (Example 1): |

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Check.
Houston Hobby Airport. Check.
McCarran International Airport. Check.
In-N-Out Burger. Check.
Six-hour drive to Salt Lake City. Check.
In other words: We are back behind the Zion Curtain.
The vacation was great. We both had a good time. And, let’s face it: Getting a chance to get out of Utah - and head to the Right Coast - is always a bonus. The chance to hang with the family-unit added a few extra points to the score, too.
We had lunch with Kris at Cracker Barrel before heading to the airport; somehow, SaraRules had never eaten at Cracker Barrel before. Back to her place to pack up and get under way for the Great Western Migration.
The flights weren’t bad. On the FLL-HOU leg, we watched Road to Perdition. Wow. How is it that I have owned - OWNED - this movie for months but not watched it?! Unglaublich! I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Since my old laptop was… old… I never watched movies on it. (No DVD player in that one.) So, watching movies on Defiant is a relatively “new” thing. Something brand-spanking new was the idea of watching the movie with the subtitles. This made understanding some of the more quiet parts of the movie much easier. While watching Road to Perdition, I think that the young lady sitting next to me was watching/reading the movie with us… but trying not to look like she was. Added bonus: We shared the flight with a polygamist family. (”It’s not a compound. It’s our home.”)
The HOU-LAS leg of the trip wasn’t hellish, even despite the baby that started screaming about halfway through the flight. Screaming. Banshee wailing. The flight was full and as people were boarding, there was an older Vietnamese (I’m Ivory Soap sure) couple that wound up having to sit apart from each other. The gentleman turned to ask if I would mind changing seats with him. I declined as:
- I had boarded early enough to choose the seat I wanted.
- I was sitting next to SaraRules
- While she is willing fly, SaraRules isn’t overly fond of it.
So, I wasn’t about to abandon her. Tough noogies, Mister.
The drive from Vegas to Salt Lake wasn’t bad. We drove past a moderate-sized brush fire just north of St. George. There were a few minutes before we got to Cedar City when I thought that we might have to stop for the night, but after getting out to top off the tank and get something to drink, I was fine for the rest of the drive. And, other than those things, the drive was rather uneventful.

A 25 min. run. I decided to up the pace to 5.8 mph. I was able to keep that up for 10 minutes, but remember the "fun" part of running that I discovered last week. I dropped to back to 5.5 and felt better and was able to complete the run, though just barely
It's interesting to feel the huge difference that only a slight pace increase can bring. 1/3 of a mile an hour kicked my ass. I don't know if it was just the pace increase, or the fact that I've been down for the past two days with a combo stomach ickyness/allergies. I guess Thursday's run will give me an indication, though I think I might turn things around: run the first 10 min at 5.5 and then push the last 15 at 5.8. We'll see how I feel when the time comes.

Recycling Home Appliances Hello, Hope someone can help or lead me to a better community to post in:
I bought a dust buster my freshman year in college (7 years ago). It is a Target retro-inspired red, round dust buster. The mouth is round like a fish. It is poorly designed and it hardly works at all. It has no suction. It is old and worthless and I have wanted to get rid of it for a while, but I wouldn't feel right just throwing it into a landfill, or even giving it to someone on freecycle or donating it to Good Will. It is completely useless junk.
What is available for recycling home appliances? It seems like even big things, like washing machines, on through to vacuums, microwaves, stereos, and even.. busted dust busters should be recyclable. Shouldn't it be possible to recycle these machines once they lose their usefulness? Couldn't we use the metal or wiring? or it's parts? or melt down the plastic?
I'm interested because I'm moving soon and need to PURGE. Plus, I've been curious for a while. I would love to know more.
Is it possible to dispose of these things responsibly? |

Float issue (maybe?) I keep having this issue but forget to ask for help, mainly because it's kind of hard to explain: Here I have a sidebar div and a text/content div, both within a container div, and then a footer div outside the container ( here's the CSS). The sidebar div is set to "float: left", the text div is not positioned, and the footer div is set to "clear: both". The issue appears when the height of the text div is less than the height of the sidebar div - then the footer jumps up to match the height of the text div as opposed to the sidebar div. I've worked around it by setting a height for the sidebar, but then I have to manually change that every time the sidebar's height changes. I have the same issue on another site where the sidebar div (float:left) and the content div (not defined) are within a container div, and the footer div (clear:both) is outside it, except here the footer stays below the sidebar but the defined background of the content div jumps up to match the height of the content div as opposed to the sidebar's, which led me to believe that it's not the footer being outside the container that's the problem. ...I hope that made at least some sense, I can try to clarify if it didn't. Any help would be greatly appreciated! |
